Making websites From Scratch is Fun... Maybe
So I know what you’re going to say, why not use squarespace, webflow or any other website builder, it would be so much faster. Well, you are right, it would be faster, but it wouldn’t be ‘my’ website. I put my time and effort into this it is something that is mine and learned more about coding then any non-coder should know. Plus I got free hosting for life with cloudflare.
What I built
With my own to hands, well, my own ten-fingers I wrote the code for two websites, a graphic design portfolio and personal website. I made my personal website back in 2023 starting completely from scratch, not even using bootstrap, just html css and js, this is the site you’re on right now. And the portfolio I made just a month ago, it took me a little longer than I thought it would, I had to relearn my skills, but it was worth it, I think.
I know what you’re thinking “your site looks so outdated,” well that’s the point. It is a throwback to when websites were your part of the web, before we relied on Facebook/instagram/etc to control our content and mediate our friendships. If I made it with a cookie-cutter template, as most do, it would look nice, but soulless and mundane.
I think I want to write a little bit more about the website making process, because I just find it so fascinating. There is so much discovery and possibility when you learn about the web ecosystem.
